What are plugins?
Plugins are tools which help you to have a better blog as they extends its functionality.
Plugins I recommend for a self-hosted blog:
Akismet – prevents spamming comments to your blog.
All in One SEO Pack – Search engine optimization. Helps your blog to rank higher on search engines.
cbnet Ping Optimizer – Saves your Wordpress blog from getting tagged as ping spammer.

Like – Let your readers quickly share your content on Facebook with a simple click.
WordPress Database Backup – With this tool, you can have a backup of your blog sent directly to your e-mail address. Backups are important because you’ll never know what can happen to your blog.
Slick Contact Forms – helps you create a contact form on your blog.
How do you add a plugin to your Wordpress blog?
To add a plugin, log into your Wordpres admin area and on the left hand side, click on Plugins. Then, click on Add New. Search for the plugin you want or write its name to search for it. Once you find the plugin you would like to add, click on Install Now and then activate it. Some plugins require that you edit and personalize their settings so once installed, check out if you need to change any settings.
After you install a plugin, always check that your blog is still showing perfectly because some plugins don’t work well on some blogs. If you see that your blog turned weird or is not showing well, delete the installed plugin immediately!
